We don’t line dry underwear and pajamas and – alas – sheets, because we all get itchy when we do. My solution is to take blue jeans and other clothes (could include towels) that have been dried outside and need to be softened and throw them in the dryer with wet undies and pjs. The wet stuff dries faster and the dry stuff softens up.

Ah memories,
We moved 4 times when I was young, and every house we moved to my mom would have my dad install a folding clothesline. One of those square models (http://tinyurl.com/mh8apq)with a 8′x8′ footprint. The best part was how stiff the clothes were once dry and how they not only smelled fresh, you knew they were fresh!

Fantastic you guys! This is certainly one of my best memories of going to my Grandma’s house. The sound of the clothesline being pulled in, the smell of the clothes from the sun and the simplicity of it are really great. It is almost like realizing the sometimes it is just fine to just drink water from the tap and that it is free! Look forward to the future of having a yard to join you in the clothesline adventure (sans skivvy’s)

There is nothing as wonderful as the fresh air smell of sheets dried on a clothesline. I agree no matter where you live they should be allowed if there is enough space, if not there are the yard models that people can put up and they work almost as well. Memories come back of my mother and our clothes having to put out on the line every Saturday morning. And rushing home cause it's starting to rain and the clothes are out. Thanks for the memories Briana. Nice post.

Here in strata land, clotheslines are verboten. I miss line dried clothes. Also: the stiff and hard clothes could be the detergent you are using – try switching to something like washing soda and borax, or try the Buffalo Recycled Laundry Soap – less things in the powder to leave residue on the clothes.

Good tip Jen! Thanks! When we're through our laundry soap, we should try a more natural cleaner and see if it makes a difference.
