Slave to the Machine

When Ross started his most recent stint of post secondary education about five years ago, his mom had a custom computer built for him as a gift. This computer has become our family computer and the one I use to complete my at-home contract work as well as my for-fun online writing both here and on my personal blog.
About three or four months ago, my hard drive appeared to pack it in, and I relied on the kindness of some friends to retrieve my valuable documents from it and save them to a thumb …

A new addition to the editorial team

You may have noticed that T2F has gone quiet this week as William and Briana awaited the new addition to their family. As those of you on facebook or twitter have already discovered, the big day has come and gone!
We are all thrilled to introduce you to Nora Mary Alden Tomkinson, who was born at 4:35am Thursday October 22nd (the day before her daddy’s birthday!). She is healthy and happy and (so far) is proving to be a very generous sleeper. Bree and Will are well and coping graciously with …

Where oh where shall the civic centre go?
It’s unfortunate this saga of lost opportunities, the best of course being a combination of The Burr and the prior city owned CIBC building next door. These two beautiful, historic buildings side by side, what better opportunity for historic Columbia Street? Sadly the CIBC building was sold off to a new owner who understood its value, walking past this building and looking in the window you see an amazing example of architecture.
Next it was 801 Columbia Street, this was it, this was where …

Knit 1, Take 2

I’m always interested in “pun”nily or cutely named groups or activities. Anne, a talented potter and knitter I met through the Royal City Farmers Market, passed on some info about another group she’s a part of called Knit 1, Take 2 and of course, I was intrigued. Um, hello, awesome name much?
Knit 1, Take 2 is a New Westminster knitters’ social group starting up all about knitting. From their website:
We are a community of enthusiastic knitters of all levels who meet in New Westminster to inspire and encourage each other, develop our skills and …

New Westminster Environmental Partners will present the only encore screening of the critically acclaimed film The Age of Stupid following its premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival. The screening follows a ‘Green Carpet’ event that NWEP promises will be attended by politicians, environmentalists and movie stars (oh, do name names, NWEP …).
The film is a “drama-documentary-animation hybrid” starring Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055, watching ‘archive’ footage from 2008 and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change while we had the chance?
The …

New Westminster, BC – The City of New Westminster launched its new website today, adding new features, fresh content and an updated look to the City’s online presence.
“Increasingly, residents, businesses and visitors to the Royal City are accessing information about us through the world wide web,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. “A content-rich, user-friendly site that captures the essence of New Westminster is a critical tool for addressing their information needs.”
The development of the new website was a key recommendation of the City’s Strategic Communications Plan completed in 2007. In the …

Personal Challenges: Raising Funds for Cancer Research

I recently made a decision to raise money for cancer research. Like a lot of people, cancer has had a direct impact on me. In 2006 I lost my dad to prostate cancer and in the early part of this year, my mom battled and beat breast cancer, thanks largely to research forwarding treatment options. I’ve always taken a bit of a skeptical eye to many of the charity runs – a lot of times I wonder if people even know how much of their dollars goes to the actual cause. …

For over three years, New Westminster Environmental Partners has been the voice of sustainable living and development in New Westminster. As a founder of the group, I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished in such a short time. To continue with this agenda, NWEP has incorporated as a non-profit society, opening new doors to expand its work.
With this in mind, we’re very excited to announce our first AGM on Tuesday, October 13th in the New Westminster Library auditorium. We’re even more excited to announce our keynote speaker for …

Free film for New West Foodies Oct. 7

Food security is a buzzword right now in the media, governments and also academia, however, many community members are still confused about what it means. Simply put, it means no one goes to bed hungry. It is important, though, that the food we consume is both nutritious and local.
