From March 3 to 5, 2017 the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets (BCAFM) will celebrate all things local at their annual conference, Farmers’ Markets For All and Farmers’ Market Awards Gala in New Westminster. The event will be held in partnership with the Royal City Farmers Market. Members of the public, local food enthusiasts and food producers are invited to attend the events running Friday through Sunday.
The fourth annual Farmers’ Market Awards Gala will take place Saturday, March 4 from 7 to 10pm at La Perla Ballroom in New Westminster. Award-winning, BC-based CBC journalist, Margaret Gallagher, will host the evening to recognize outstanding farmers’ markets and vendors for their contribution to their communities. Gala attendees will have the opportunity to sample the flavours of British Columbia with a banquet dinner featuring locally produced food and wine, sourced from BC farms and wineries.
The Farmers’ Market Awards Gala is just one of many farmers’ market themed events taking place in New Westminster for the BCAFM’s annual conference. Events will also include networking opportunities and workshops for community leaders, farmers, food-based businesses and farmers’ market organizers. Workshop topics include Creating Accessible Markets – Conduct, Audit and Engage Volunteers, lead by Hayley Sinclair, membership services coordinator for the New Westminster based Community Volunteer Connections, an organization dedicated to helping organizations build volunteer initiatives that have a positive community impact. Event sponsors include the City of New Westminster, the Arts Council of New Westminster, Steel & Oak Brewing Co. and River Market.
Additional events include a keynote address by Richard McCarthy, Slow Food USA executive director. McCarthy will discuss practical steps to ensure farmers’ markets support healthy economies, communities and eaters.
