It’s Official: The Hip to Be Broadcast at Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Fest

Crowd & evening sky from Blackwood 2 (large)As if the Food Truck Festival hosted by the Downtown BIA isn’t amazing enough, the Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Fest just became even more irresistible! The Downtown New West BIA announced in a press release that the CBC and The Tragically Hip will present ‘The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration,” a live screening of one of the final concerts ever of the Tragically Hip at the Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Fest on August 20th.

IMG_0425The shows for this tour have been highly anticipated, selling out in minutes as each set of tickets has come available. I tried to get myself a pair of tickets but had no success and I noticed a few of my Twitter friends expressing disappointment with missing out. The last time I saw this iconic band live was in 1996 when the tickets were only $35.10 and Pacific Coliseum was considered a great venue. The Hip isn’t my favourite CanCon, but every. single. song. is singable and includes so much of our country.

Being able to live stream this show right here in New Westminster means we don’t have to pick between the allure of downtown Vancouver and their live streaming event, we can enjoy an already great festival made greater. It sure doesn’t hurt that there are endless food and snack options and beer gardens lining Columbia Street. If you can’t see this tour live, I think this is the very best way to watch a show of this magnitude.

“The live screening of this concert by one of Canada’s best-loved bands combined with the largest food truck festival in North America makes New Westminster the place to be on August 20th,” said Mayor Jonathan Coté in the release. “We’re excited to welcome residents and visitors alike to our downtown for this event and very proud to be partnering in support of such an important cause.”

The concert, made possible with assistance from the City of New Westminster, will incorporate a major fundraising element, thanks to a partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society.

“Gord Downie, lead singer of The Tragically Hip, is one of 3,000 Canadians who will face a brain cancer diagnosis this year and we need to do something about that,” says Greg Douglas, Annual Giving Director, Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon. “By partnering with the Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Fest we can call on thousands of people to join us in the fight against brain cancer.”

The Downtown New West BIA anticipates that the Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Fest will host over 100,000 attendees this year. This presents a tremendous opportunity for the event and our community to leave a lasting legacy towards cancer research. Donations will be accepted in honour of Gord Downie throughout the day and more details about how that will happen will come out soon. What we do know is that the concert begins at 5.30pm and will last until 8.30pm. The broadcast will occur on a 27 foot screen at the east end of Columbia Street, past Stephano’s and the Brooklyn Bar & Grill. There’s no cost.

We here at Tenth encourage making a donation to show your appreciation and to help out the cause – every little bit – even loonies – makes a difference.
