New West Wednesday: Summer Festival Season begins!

Today's topic is suggested by my neighbour Sloane, who emailed this suggestion: I had an idea for the next New West Wed: Summer Festivals! Which one is your favourite and why. I know there are ads in the newspaper and stuff but I always feel like I miss the smaller ones. And maybe someone might have a reason that would convince me to try others?

This was a timely suggestion for me – I am meeting with the organizing committee for this year’s Summerfest In Grimston Park (coming up on July 16!) tonight. As usual, feel free to weigh in via Twitter, Facebook comments, or on the blog. And if you’ve got a suggestion for a future discussion topic, please email info at tenthtothefraser.ca.

  1. I don't have a favourite. I like that on any given weekend in the summer, I can probably find a fun festival or event in New West. I also love seeing how many of these festivals and events are volunteer created and maintained. Makes me happy knowing that many people are committed.

  2. Don't forget Sapperton Day Festival on Sunday June 12th. They asked me to be the MC for the day, looking forward to it. This Festival goes back to the early days of Sapperton. It languished for a number of years and we got it going again about 20 years ago in the park when we lived on Richmond Street. Stopped again and was restarted as the Sapperton Street Festival – now it is huge. All volunteer and raises money for RCH. Fun day for sure.
Don't forget our Quayside Boardwalk Festival and Sale (5th Annual) on August 20th. That is also a volunteer festival. Information will be out soon on this one for tables and booths. RCFarmers Market is confirmed it will be the second year for them.
The 12th Street Festival is also coming up soon and that is volunteers as well. I hear there are two events per weekend in New Westminster throughout the summer.

  3. A brand new event happening July and August every Wednesday 7-9 PM at the Queen's Park Bandshell…..POETRY IN THE PARK. There will be a featured poet to kick each event off followed by an open mic session for those who wish to read or perform their poetry. This will be a a lot of fun and we hope everyone will support this event so we can run it every year! The best part is IT'S FREE!! Just come on down and enjoy! We have some great talent lined up. Check out our Facebook page for the featured poets and their dates. FB page is Poetry in the Park New Westminster
