Youth Art in New West

Stephen O'Shea with some arts options for youth.

Hey Art Fans!

This past Wednesday, I attended a fantastic exhibition called ARTASTIC at 100 Braid Street Studios. The exhibition was artwork of students from Urban Academy ranging from kindergarten to grade 12. It was incredible to see the many different style and disciplines of artwork and the integration of curriculums and technology into the students understanding and appreciation for art. For something that adults often dismiss as “youth art”, I was astounded at just how much the arts is integrated into the daily lives of the students of Urban Academy. Certainly a lot of credit goes to their teachers for their creativity. Way to go Ms. Spencer!

This got me thinking about all the other opportunities for “youth art” in our community. It’s everywhere and all we need to do is recognize it once and a while.

At the Arts Council of New Westminster we are doing our best to reach out to the community and inspire the artists or tomorrow with our ArtsToGo program. Currently you can find us on the first Sunday of each month offering free arts workshops to children and their families at Royal City Centre from noon to 3pm. Just look for the Arts Council tent set up between WalMart and the Dollarama. You and your family will be lead through exciting arts and craft projects that you can take home with you.  No need to pre-register, just drop on in.

If making art isn’t your thing but you love to go to art galleries and you want to inspire your children to be our next generation arts patrons, head down to the Anvil Centre and discover The Secret Gallery. Up on the third floor and through the New Westminster Museum, you can find this Gallery dedicated specifically to children’s art. Exhibiting works by those participants of the Anvil Centre’s arts workshops and programming, there have been some amazing works of art created and displayed here. Definitely take the time to hunt for this best kept secret in New Westminster!

If classes are more your thing, head to Sapperton for Kids in Motion.  They’ve got a studio of amazing classes for your kids to unleash their inner performing artist! Help them build the confidence to express themselves. They have great teachers and a comfortable environment for those starting out and great programs as your child matures. Don’t forget there are great kids classes being offered by Music Box New West and The Stage New West too. There are opportunities to get your kids started in the arts today!

Finally, there’s no better opportunity to celebrate all the amazing aspects of our children than by giving them their very own festival. Don’t miss the Queensborough Children’s Festival, happening on June 18th from noon to 3pm at the Queensborough Community Centre. There will be all sorts of activities and arts and crafts for your budding artist to enjoy and the focus will totally be on them. The future of community is our children. Let’s foster their creativity and inspire them to create the amazing world of world of tomorrow!
